If you are looking to buy a new car, I have a few tips for you here that should make the process a lot easier.
Negotiating with a dealer can be tricky, they do this for a living and are well used to getting people to agree to something they didn’t want 5 minutes earlier. You need be strong and assertive, let them know that you have seen cars in other lots and aren’t bothered which one you get, you will go with dealer which offers the best deal.
Be succinct and business like at all times. Salesmen/women rely on being able to chat to you as if they were your friend and talk you into buying something way out of your price range. Stay remote and seem uninterested in their patter until they give up and start to talk about the car.
Salespeople have to come across and friendly and amiable otherwise we wouldn’t buy anything off them. A really good one will try and sell you all sorts of add-ons etc. Don’t be sucked in by their banter, they only want your money.
Be prepared and do your research before you enter the lot. If you have seen an ad for a similar model, take it with you. Try and find out the Kelly blue book value and make a note of that too.
Find out how much others have paid for similar cars and how good a deal they’ve been able to negotiate. This will come in very handy when you are negotiating with your sales person.
The salesman needs you and your money much more than you need them. You can easily walk out and go to another lot; they have to wait for customers to come to them, so you are in a winning position from the outset.
Knowing exactly what you want before you enter the lot will make the sales man uneasy. He will still try and undermine your confidence and talk you into something that you don’t want. If the dynamics shifty and you start to feel undermined, walk out straight away.
